Peter's scripts are already in the cvs tree.  They take a prepared machine with aolserver and database server already installed and put in everything necessary for a specific OpenACS service, leaving it a running, fully installed service.  They are not bulletproof yet, and so are mostly useful for developers working on Core who need to reinstall regularly.  I would like to add David's scripts when he feels they are ready - my understanding is that they automate the first part of the Install Guide, covering aolserver and the database.  The obvious next step is to go to a standard package - RPM, debian, FreeBSD port, etc.  The current barriers to that are 1) an OpenACS volunteer familiar with RPM/.deb/etc and 2) a binary package of AOLserver.
As this work is going in I think it's fair to say this was
in fact approved.
