Forum OpenACS Q&A: How about a tutor for AOLserver/Tcl?

Hi folks

As a newcomer to the AOL/Tcl/Postgres scene, I am impressed by the
general level of documentation. But the one big gap seems to be a
tutor on good style using this combination. They are clearly elegant
tools, but there is a steep learning curve facing anyone seeking to
make the most of their power.

The Tcl for Web Geeks tutor is very useful, but leaves much unsaid. I
suspect the best learning tool with be a review of the ACS code
itself, but this is the hard way to do things. I suspect that a good
tutorial would encourage more people into the ACS community, and
would give more people the confidence to begin to contribute to the
ACS codebase.

I had a quick chat with Ben about this, and he suggested I put the
idea to the community. If anyone has something in the works, or if
anyone would be prepared to take this on, I would do what I can to
help (I am quite experienced as an author and editor of training
materials). They do say that the best way to learn something is to
write about it...

I am working on a specific tutorial for OpenACS that will deal with customizing the look and feel and later functionality of OpenACS. The problem most new users have is knowing where to start. The tools are very powerful and flexible, so there are really just too many options. I hope to explain one path to take in customizing an OpenACS site. The preliminary draft of the first section is available here.

I would appreciate any comments or advice you may have regarding a direction to take with this. I am writing this as I learn it myself.

Unluckily the link didn't work. As Dave already posted this link in a prior bboard posting, I dared to copy it from there... 😊

This is the link that should work...

Dave

Thanks for responding. I will get back with some feedback once I have had the opportunity to use your tutorial hands-on.
