1: Italian translation of ACS and openACS

Is there somebody that already begin a translation from English to other language, and already thought this:
If one translate all openACS-3.4 in Italian (i.e.) then we have a new version openACS-3.5 or openACS-4.0, how can we avoid to redo all the translation works?

The solution is in CVS I think, but there is already something similar?

The solution to not duplicating this work is actually in a
multi-lingual system, which you can't really expect until 4.0.
However, 3.x is at the end of its term, so translating it now would
be perfectly safe. We expect a bug fix release (3.2.5), but that's it.
