Take a look at orkut's profile page for another possible use case:

http://www.orkut.com/EditContact.aspx

They ask for profile information then on the same line a drop down for privacy control.

The orkut's profile page is *exactly* what I had in mind when writing the last 10 lines of my posting, but I prefer the checkboxes so you are more flexible in whom to give access :).
