Forum OpenACS Q&A: Re: Setting up an OpenACS Foundation

Jeff, if you could explain a little more the reasoning behind why this is needed, I'd appreciate it. As a founder of a 501(c)3 organization, I know that there is quite a bit of overhead involved in having a 501(c)3, and so I guess my first question is why we want to do it. We aren't going after grants, are we? We don't anticipate large charitable gifts, do we?

I do think we may apply for grants; although it's most likely that the way this will happen is that the companies and individuals currently doing work around OpenACS would be finding the funding opportunities and writing the proposals in conjunction with the foundation. I don't expect large charitable gifts to roll in but I do think if the foundation existed we might get some hardware donations as well as some money to subsidize bootcamps and educational materials.

It would also be easier I think for a group like e-lane or the dotLRN consortium to fund something like an upgrade of openacs.org if the foundation existed (though perhaps it would be just as easy for them to fund that directly).
