Forum OpenACS Q&A: Getting OpenACS into Fedora

Hi,

we are thinking about getting Project/Open into the RedHat Fedora "Extras" packages. That would be the ultimate distribution channel for us... Here is the link:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Extras

Our idea is to split the distribution into (at least) three packages:
- An OpenACS base module,
- A Project/Open add-on and
- the dotLrn guys will probably want another add-on

However, there seem to be several issues:
- I believe that there is already a AOLServer package for
Fedora (there is one in SuSE for sure), but it's lacking
the OpenACS specific such as tDom, the PosgreSQL driver
etc. So we would either have to extend the existing stuff
or build a somehow duplicated AOLServer package. Maybe it
would be interesting to hear what Dossy says about this...

- We would need a "Sponsor": "Another Extras Contributor or
RH engineer (but not yourself) to sponsor your package OR
it was included in a previous version of Fedora Core"

Does anybody know one of the RH engineers or another Fedora "Extras" contributor?

Concerning organization: We (Project/Open) have no particular need to lead this effort. So if somebody else feels the itch... We will definitely support the effort and participate actively in testing etc.

Bests,
Frank

Bart,

wouldn't you like to lead this initiative? I mean, you have done all the hard work creating the RPMs, so you should receive all the glory when it's going to be published?
