Rolf,  The problem with COBRA is that the ex employee pays the full cost of insurance which can be too expensive to cary with out a job.  2-400/month is not unusual for a single person with no kids.  I said that it might be a good idea to not carry that much insurance with out a specific need, not to go with out.  I said to get a catistrophic policy, $5-10,000 deductable 80-100% coverage after that depending on what you might think you need and can pay for.  One of the problems with medical insurance is that the full cost is hidden from you, more or less, until you are least able to pay for it.  I would much prefer employers givving me a budget( their contribution) and some plans that they would administer with the option for me to go else where with the money and have the option to get better then what they provide if I am willing to pay the difference.
