Forum OpenACS Q&A: Response to What does "Enterprise Class" mean?

is there a difference between "mission critical" and "enterprise class"?

I define them as:

Enterprise class systems are about setting global standards, being leaders in taking action (not just talk), creating capable, high-capacity [mission critical] solutions that can be applied and adapted to the multitude of local environments (localization). This kind of system is too large for any single firm to really develop well --requiring a vast network of alliances as in "open source" development for example.

Mission critical - something that is required in to reach a goal. Such as an egg-timer reminding me about a current mission: dinner cooking on the stove.

Enterprise solutions are not just a buzzword for the Global 2000, but a buzzword for anyone (entrepreneur, volunteer, corporation etc) who wants to participate in a global event (of a common mission) in creating something greater (than the sum of the parts) through a concerted effort.
