Forum OpenACS Q&A: Requests

- Could we have the FreeBSD installer (https://openacs.org/forums/message-view?message_id=312823) and the darwinport (https://openacs.org/forums/message-view?message_id=311960) added to the homepage section "How do I install OpenACS" ? And possibly at the (hard to find) installer page: https://openacs.org/projects/openacs/installer ?

- Could we fix https://openacs.org/storage, so I could delete old versions of the FreeBSD installer?

- Could we add a link to storage under "Contributing code" (at https://openacs.org/contribute/) to encourage using storage for scripts, installers (when not using CVS) ?

- Could we fix http://test.openacs.org to link to http://strauss.gast.it.uc3m.es/ or add a link to the test servers on the homepage ?

Thanks.

I covered the first bullet point. Some german university made an evaluation of .LRN and they came up with the following points where OpenACS & .LRN is lacking:

- The installation instructions are too complex, as you have to install several components seperately. It should be better to have only one installation without getting the seperate components from seperate websites. I already started with the automated installer scripts which I hopefully can test a little bit more.

- We should have a PDF manual for offline reading.

- Our sourcecode is lacking internal documentation

- .LRN is missing developer documentation.

My guess is that we'd have to promote our documentation for OpenACS on dotlrn.org as well, as we do have most of the documents available.

Malte, a student of mine is extending an existing installer for linux based that does all the stuff with one command. We will submit the installer when finished.

I also think we should provide the community with an improved package builder to be used as the toolkit to start with for those interested in OpenACS and dotLRN development.

Regarding the documentation maybe we should start with our book project ;)...the first step would be to get all the how to and little tutorials that are in the web together with the official documentation and work on the table of content. Once this is set we could start writing.

Hi Nima,

I would be very interested to see how your linux installer works. I've worked on several projects and I've used the install.sh and install.xml files to script the installation process.

Thanks,

Hamilton
