Can anyone tell me how to configure my AOLserver to show an error
description in the browser when a piece of code returns an error.

I'm not using OpenACS on this particular project, so I won't be able
to put a [catch] into the request processor (I don't know if that
would help me anyway).

David Walker posted how he does that here. you'll have to make a couple minor changes if you're not using the ACS.
