Forum OpenACS Q&A: New development?

I need to develop a brand new ecommerce site.
Must have discussion groups and reviews, perhaps user-supplied web
pages, so a lot of the simplistic paper-to-web tools are just not
usable without substantial work.

I've pretty much decided on OpenACS, but should I be using version 3 or 4?

To let you know my level, if you need that info to make a suggestion,
I've just started working my way through the boot-camp material, and
have a ton of perl/C/Linux/Oracle(DBI, PL/SQL)
(but of all that experience, zero web development, natch...)

PS -looks like arsdigita.com is gone, with most of the pages
unfindable on the Redhat site.

PPS - Also, has the ecommerce situation changed greatly since Philip
wrote about it in Philip and Axel's guide?  As soon as I know what's
going on with ACS I'll have to try to integrate with one of the
Canadian merchant account providers. (their tech docs are 'in email')

Your time (and hopefully your answers ) are greatly appreciated.

The e-commerce package in OpenACS 4 is essentially the old e-commerce package from OpenACS 3 with many, many bug fixes and (recently) a plug-in interface for a variety of payment services.  So you should undoubtably use it.

RH is supporting ACS Java, which many ex-ArsDigitans (not to mention others) seem to feel has problems.  YMMV.
