I am planning to use OACS to develop an e-commerce site, I would like
those who have already done so, or at least had a good play around
with the e-commerce module, to give me their opinions on the relative
merits of the 2 postgres versions.

From looking at the forum, I have to say I am uncertain wether 4.5
works with 7.2.1 and maybe I should wait for 4.6.

I'd go with 7.2.2, which was just released, and wait for 4.6.  There have been a steady stream of updates to the e-commerce package recently and you might as well take advantage of them if you can.  You might e-mail the package maintainer, Bart Teeuwisse, directly for information (visit https://openacs.org/directory to find his e-mail address).
