The most frequent critic of the Petri Net based WF 4.5 is that it's too complex and that the power of Petri Nets is not needed for most real-world applications. So I guess that the PI-Calculus would not really improve this situation...
My personal feeling is that the majority of the WF 4.5 complexity comes from all the things around the actual Petri Net such as roles & assignments, "panels" and the custom PlPgSQL code that you need to implement custom actions.
So the situation should actually get not much worse with PI-Calculus... 😊
