Forum OpenACS Q&A: after installation how to access

Collapse
Posted by James Godrej on
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and I installed
apt-get install openacs

now how do I access the openacs
I type in browser http://localhost
or http://192.168.1.3 from a different machine but nothing came.

Hi James,

Try http://localhost:8000/, this is the default for the ubuntu packages.

The address and port that openacs will listen on can be configured in /etc/aolserver4/conf.d/openacs.sh.

Cheers, Héctor

Error when trying to connect to the pgsql database. This error can occur if you have no database to connect to, or if the password was incorrect.

Did you install Postgresql first, as suggested in https://openacs.org/xowiki/ubuntu?

If not, you should install it and purge/reinstall the openacs package.

Cheers, Héctor

How ever while install postgresql it did not asked me to create any admin user account or so.While entering details which openacs installer asked I entered a username and password which for postgresql I had not created.

Any how this time I was able to see the openacs thing on http://localhost:8000
but same was not visible on http://192.168.1.3:8000/
as most of the time it will be a ssh based access. While installation was going on at localhost I by mistake pressed Esc and it stopped it is not beginning again what should I do for this situation?

As I said before, the address and port that openacs will listen on can be configured in /etc/aolserver4/conf.d/openacs.sh.

While installation was going on at localhost I by mistake pressed Esc and it stopped it is not beginning again what should I do for this situation?

The easier thing you can do is drop the database, purge the package, and reinstall it.

Great this works.I am able to see it on lan also.I want to know one more thing if you can tell we want to use Apache with reverse proxy as a front end to this installation is this some where mentioned how can I use Apache as a Reverse Proxy to the AOLServer installation.
Collapse
Posted by Héctor Romojaro on
Hi James,

It's easy, just configure your aolserver to listen, for example, on 127.0.0.1:80, and have a look at the apache mod_proxy documentation to redirect the requests you want to aolserver. Typical apache config could be something like this:

##### Proxy
ProxyRequests off

<proxy>
    Order deny,allow
    Allow from all
</proxy>

ProxyPreserveHost On

ProxyPass /whatever http://127.0.0.1/whatever
ProxyPassReverse /whatever http://127.0.0.1/whatever
...

Have a look at google, there are lots of examples about that.

Cheers, Héctor

Ok I understood that part see. I also want to know one more thing if I always use the AOLServer default installation to listen on port 8000 and use a different machine where I configure the Reverse Proxy (I am using 10 more applications on reverse proxies ) the machine where I have OpenACS installed I also want to run some applications which depend upon Apache so my machine where reverse proxy would be configured would be machine different from the one where OpenACS is working.
On the same time I want the machine where OpenACS is working to use Apache also (is that possible ) or to have OpenACS working I need to shutdown Apache on that machine.Since we have applications that heavily depend upon Apache so my thought is to keep OpenACS (AolServer) in its default state of installation and then configure an Apache Reverse proxy on a different machine or do I necessarily need the Apache on computer where OpenACS is to use.I think I made myself clear let me know if the question is not clear.

I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly.

You can have the proxy on a different machine, as far as i know, there is no problem with that.

Hi Hector you can check my site

http://openacs.openitup.in
following is Apache vhost entry on machine which faces internet (OpenACS) is hosted on some machine on LAN.

ServerName openacs.openitup.in
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost

ProxyPass / http://192.168.1.5:8000/
ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.1.5:8000/

Upto here it is correct but when I login then I see
the internal IP in URL and port (which is not visible to outside world) or I do not want the request to be served
as http://openacs.openitup.in:8000
port 8000 is not open at gateway so the login breaks.

This is the situation I am referring to.

James,

in OpenACS, when logged in as admin, go to /admin/site-map

scroll to the bottom of the page.

In the services section, click on "TCL Library"

Change the parameter SuppressHttpPort to value of 1 from value of 0.

restart AOLserver.

Voila! port should not be included in redirects..

cheers!

Torben

Hi Torben thanks for the message I did that but even after restart of aolserver it did not happen the way you mentioned.

I then rebooted the entire machine but still I see port 8000 in the redirects.

Inface restarting of aolserver gives following

/etc/init.d/aolserver4 restart

maybe the prior version didn't stop before the start of the new one.. odd. try rebooting the server..

The parameter was specifically created for the purpose of hiding the port on redirects etc when behind proxies.

Collapse

I did reboot but it did not helped and I still see the port in redirects.
Let me know if you need any further information from my settings.
Collapse
Posted by Torben Brosten on
Hi James,

Hmm..

I've only used SuppressHttpPort with the Kernel parameter ForceHostP set to 1. Maybe that is the why it's not working?

Kernel is located at bottom of /admin/site-map also. Restart AOLserver afterward..

Aha!

This is a recent addition added to cvs HEAD version circa January 15, 2010. The 5.5.1 version of OpenACS you have has only a partially implemented version.

I believe the easiest thing to do would be upgrading to a version released after that. I'm not sure where the release info is, I can't find consistent release info for the last few versions. Hopefully someone else can chime in with it. I'm running HEAD versions only right now..

cheers,
Torben

I tried changing things as you mentioned but what I observed when I tried to save the settings

I was redirected to some big Url you can see it here http://pastebin.com/dRPx8CmP

I am not able to understand one thing when I am trying to modify things when logged in from internet (physically at a different location than where OpenACS server is ) I notice in URL bar http://localhost:8000 which obviously is not present from where I am accessing it.
I think I have missed some part in configuration let me know.
Following are the entries of my

AOL_USER=www-data
AOL_GROUP=www-data
AOL_ADDRESS=192.168.1.19
AOL_PORT=8000
RUN_DAEMON=yes

I un installed openacs after this problem

aptitude remove openacs
aptitude purge openacs

and re installed
aptitude install openacs

and this is a fresh install when I check
http://localhost:8000/
then I get automatically redirected to
http://localhost:8000/openacs.openitup.in

I started from scratch if this problem we can get rid then I feel it will work.

I did a find on all files with openacs or aolserver
and deleted each file manually.
After this I installed again aptitude install openacs

I am getting an error http://localhost:8000

/etc/init.d/aolserver4 start

^C

So now I am not even able to install it.

James, though I have used reverse proxy extensively, it hasn't been across multiple machines.

I *believe* your remaining problem from the previous system had to do with using "localhost" as the domain in AOLserver's config, and yet not indicating the domain change in the reverse proxy settings.

If you set the domain in the AOLserver config.tcl file to the IP address (for consistency), and then include the domain name in the reverse proxy configuration, I think your problems would largely disappear.

cheers,

Torben

Well currently I am dealing with installation on local machine. No proxy pass business.A fresh install of openacs
aptitude install openacs
and you should expect when you open browser on local machine
where you just finished install
http://localhost:8000

here I see myself helpless as I open
http://localhost:8000
immediately I see a redirection happening.

http://localhost:8000/openacs.openitup.in

I am right now not able to get it working within LAN itself.
No issues of ProxyPass on this machine.
I feel at least http://localhost:8000
should work so that I go ahead with installer and proceed.

Hi James,

Did you drop the old database before reinstalling the openacs package?

Cheers, Héctor

I executed following command
aptitude remove postgresql

if this drops then yes if not then I do not know how can it be dropped.

Collapse

Just execute psql as the postgres user (for example), type \l, press enter, and see if the openacs database is still there. If needed, you can drop it with "DROP DATABASE openacs".

There is no command like \I or \L or \i or \l which command you want me to execute let me know.

Now after I dropped the database things here proceeded

when I type in URL
http://192.168.1.5:8000

I can see following

OpenACS Installation: Error ____________________________________________________________

Thank you for installing the Open Architecture Community System (OpenACS), a suite of fully-integrated enterprise-class solutions for collaborative commerce.
This is the OpenACS Installer which performs all the steps necessary to get the OpenACS Community System running on your server.

Please read the Release Notes before proceeding to better understand what is contained in this release. The following database pools generated errors:
* OpenACS could not allocate a handle from database pool "pool1".
Possible causes might include:
* The database is not running.
* The database driver has not been correctly installed.
* The datasource or database user/password are incorrect.
* You didn't define any database pools.
The first step involved in setting up your OpenACS installation is to configure your RDBMS, correctly install a database driver, and configure AOLserver to
use it. You can download and install the latest version of the AOLserver Oracle and PostgreSQL drivers from the OpenACS.org Software Page.

Once you're sure everything is installed and configured correctly, restart AOLserver.
mailto:gatekeepers@openacs.org

This is a better error than previously getting redirected
to http://localhost:8000/openacs.openitup.in

I am able to now see the installer screen.
Let me know what here on I need to do.
